If you are nestled in Florida’s southeastern city of Fort Lauderdale, a quick trip to Key West is only a few hours away. Though the distance may be too great for a single day trip, it makes for the perfect destination on a long weekend.
Fort Lauderdale is about three and a half hours away from the Keys by car. If you are wanting to avoid the long hours behind the wheel, shuttles often run between the two cities on a slightly longer interval. Nevertheless, the time to travel should take less than half a day. Given a three-day weekend your itinerary make look something like this:
Day 1: Day 2: Day 3:
Morning – Travel All Day – Leisure Morning/Afternoon – Leisure
Afternoon/Night – Leisure Night – Travel
The trip will take you down the east coast of the state as you pass West of Miami on US-1. While taking the brief 45 minute flight would save you time, it keeps you from enjoying the drive through the Florida Keys. If you have the additional time in your schedule, stops can be made at Key Largo, Plantation Key, and Marathon.
You will find a number of ways to unwind upon arrival. Key West offers an array of beaches and local eateries for you to experience different takes on traditional Caribbean cuisine. Though the environment may not be a complete change of scenery, the time away is enough of an oasis to make for a relaxing vacation.
