Key West Scooters: Do’s & Don’t

Busy streets and warm weather mean visitors want to spend less time on the streets of Key West and more in the sunshine. The size of the Keys often prompt visitors to find a more effective way to move around the roads rather than needing to walk from point to point. Renting motor scooters has become a default option for many wanting to avoid a car, but they come with a yellow legal pad filled with pros and cons.

Do Rent a Scooter

Motor scooters are the perfect machine for Key West. They are open to the air and allow riders to still embrace the warm weather and pleasant breeze as they do something simple like driving to dinner. The machines can run from $30-$50/day for a single seater, but will run higher for the larger models. Rates may not be perfect, but around the Keys are a number of parking spots free to scooters that would otherwise require a paid meter. Scooters are an easy way to move from point to point, but require the proper attention.

Don’t Dismiss Pre-Rental Actions

Scooters may not have the same intimidating presence as a heavy bike or car, but they can still be just as dangerous. Any reputable dealer will provide helmets and instruction on how to control the scooters. Even for experienced riders, it is important to know that every bike will react differently in acceleration, braking and turning. Take the time to become comfortable with your scooter before taking to the ride. Just as important, inspect the machine before you leave the lot. You will be liable for any damage and the greatest defense will be video or photo proof of how the scooter looked before you take off.

Don’t Drive Differently Than Normal

Being under the sun on vacation can cause you to be more relaxed than normal. Do not let the Key West air distract you from responsibilities on the road. Scooters still need to obey typical rules of the road. Stop at lights. Yield to larger vehicles. Stay between the lines. Drive defensively. The latter is the most important. Drive defensively. Motor scooters can go unseen in car mirror’s, but that does not mean a collision is not possible. The purpose of renting a scooter is to enhance the vacation experience, and that is only done with proper respect to the road.

Many will advise against renting a scooter, but if you feel comfortable then it can be a great convenience. Those hesitant can still find travel alternatives with golf carts, bicycles, and electric cars available from a number of rental businesses.
