Ideal Key West Weather

There is a clearly defined “tourist” season in Key West. The influx of non-local persons reaches a high point as the calendar turns over and the holiday season is in full swing. Uncoincidentally, these numbers match the favorable weather numbers of the year for Key West. Those looking to avoid the larger numbers may be willing to withstand the slightly less favorable temperatures in fringe travel months.

Temperature

Key West’s southern relation in comparison the rest of the nation means they have some of the best winter weather readily available. It comes as no surprise that tourist numbers spike in the months where guests can expect the temperature to average around a comfortable 70°F. Over the summer months (May through September) that number elevates over ten degrees with the mean temperature climbing towards the upper end of the scale, often settling higher around 90°F.

Between these two extremes are a couple of fringe months where potential guests may feel they are willing to deal with slightly higher temperatures. The month of April is the first time the calendar will see an average high peak over 80°F, but the average remains in the 70’s for much of the month. Likewise, in November, the daily higher typically sneaks over the 80 degree mark, but the average rests at a more comfortable level.

Precipitation

Learning how to avoid extreme humidity can be the difference between an enjoyable vacation and a sweaty one. Precipitation levels are at annual lows between December and April where the average is less than two inches of rain. The summer months show a drastic change as the expected downpour will be north of five inches with the understanding that it may easily peak higher.

March and April mark yearly lows for precipitation with average rain coming down at less than two inches per month. A favorite alternative, the drier air makes the rising temperatures more bearable.

Ideal Time

The ideal time to visit Key West will undoubtedly be during the winter months. Temperatures are at their more enjoyably levels and the drier air makes for a more comfortable time at the beach. April stands as an outlier to the non-touristy months as a month with attractive weather, but lower tourist numbers.
